Produced in collaboration with Lakota artist Shawn Zephier, the hills in the centre and those along the central part represent his native land, the Black Hills-or “Paha Sapa.” To the Lakota Nation, the Black Hills are the centre of the universe. The dragonflies in the centre are the “messengers” who transmit their prayers to the stars-their ancestors. The bison tracks on either side of the central design represent the Bison Nation and underscore the animal’s role in sustaining their ancestors both physically and spiritually. The three bands at the top and bottom of the design symbolize the traditional patterns he often integrates into his beaded moccasins.
